Drapery

Window Treatments are sometimes a challenge.  Floor-to-ceiling windows are beautiful, but the sun streams in and is damaging.  How to protect from the sun, insulate the house, give privacy are jobs for window treatments.  Shades of all descriptions, shutters and draperies are solutions.  Sometimes a shade can be softened with a drapery panel.  Actually drapery is very popular in all design styles.  Drapery can make you ceilings look higher and make the room itself look better dressed and more spacious.  They also frame the view.

Here are some tips to make your room stunning with drapery:

Drapery needs have fullness.  There are many weights of fabric and many ways to drape a window.  For this discussion I will use a standard, but there are variations.  I have found that two and one half fullness is pleasing to the eye. and shows off the fabric.

Make the drapery generous in length.  My drapery installer leaves 1” from the floor.  You can also “puddle” drapery panels for a lush look.

Keep the drapery rods at least four to twelve inches above the top of the window, making the windows look higher.  Extend the drapery rod 6 to 20 inches on either side of the window to let the light stream in.  Depending on the weight of the fabric, the drapery will stack differently.

Most drapery fabrics have polyester in them.  Polyester tends to flair at the bottom.  My drapery workrooms uses a weighted bead at the bottom of the hem to let the drapery hang straight.
